Ground-Penetrating Radar Surveys in the Congaree National Park

Funded by DNR/SCGS

Project Description

This project is a designed to be a complement to the existing geological mapping project in the Congaree National Park (CNP) presently being supported by the DNR/SCGS (USC# 13040 FA-85 for Dr. Art Cohen).  The objective of this effort will be to use USC’s new Ground-Penetrating-Radar (GPR) system (purchased last year by a grant received from National Science Foundation) to reveal subsurface details of the geology in areas of the CNP where there is presently no (or poor) accessibility for a standard drilling rig or where standard drilling would be too time-consuming or not cost effective.  In order to verify the effectiveness of GPR surveys in this area, we conducted two short test transects last year in the CNP, which demonstrated the effectiveness of this system for obtaining the information proposed herein. Previous collaboration between the PI’s and SCGS/DNR personnel has resulted in the selection of several potential transect sites for this study.
